With a equal nearly 50/50 weight distribution and functioning as a rear engine, rear wheel drive, the Vanagon's manners on the highway, around town or off road is without parallel for a vehicle of this shape and size.
Volkswagen upgraded the engine several times during it's 11 years of production starting with the 2.0L 70hp air-cooled gas engine the first 1980 model, a 50hp diesel version, eventually ending up with 2.1L waterboxer and 95 horses in the 1986-1991's, power was not the focus for VW.
The Vanagon was intended to be a people and cargo hauler. It had many variations; they were built as 7- Passenger Transporters, Panel Vans, Westfalia Camper Vans, Specialty Trucks called Sinka's and Doka's and they also had Syncro (4WD) models. A model for everyone!
